As always, the colder months provide boundless opportunities to come together, stay warm and celebrate as a community. One such occasion took place at the Port Union Community Winterfest, where I was able to meet with neighbours, discuss pertinent issues and—perhaps most important of all-- hand out cotton candy to many mitten-clad hands! Thanks to all the volunteers and organizers for making it another great celebration and showcase of our community.
I am delighted to announce that the amendments to the Rouge National Urban Park Act, Bill C-18 has passed. This bill will ensure that the Rouge National Urban Park will have better protection and will add an additional 17.1 sq kms to the park. It has been an honour to advocate alongside many members of the community for this purpose, and it brings me great pride to represent the Rouge National Urban Park as such a significant part of our riding.
The Minister of Heritage, the Honourable Melanie Joly, stopped by Scarborough on February 9th to announce a $5.5 Million yearly funding for Inter-Action Diversity Programs. The program funds initiatives that work towards inclusiveness promote youth engagement and advocate the elimination of discrimination, racism and prejudice. It was a great pleasure to welcome Minister Joly on her first visit to Scarborough, and to host her as made the announcement at TAIBU Community Health Centre located in Malvern.
With tax season fast approaching, in the coming months, we will be hosting volunteer tax clinics, providing free services to low income households and seniors. For more information about eligibility for the tax clinics or information about services we offer please contact my office.
