On Saturday, April 20, residents will have plenty of opportunities to participate in our community Earth Day at the Port Union and West Rouge community centres.

The day kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with the area cleanup. Residents are encouraged to pick up litter using provided garbage bags and gloves available at the Port Union CC. Volunteer hours will be given to students and a free lunch will be provided to all volunteers at noon at the Port Union CC.

Members of the Rouge Butterflyway will be there to discuss native plants, which you’ll be able to pre-order for your garden.

There will be FREE compost available in the Port Union CC parking lot courtesy of Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie, as well as FREE paper shredding for your sensitive papers courtesy of Iron Mountain.

A FREE drop-in building workshop for children between 10 a.m. and noon will allow kids to make cedar planters for their potted seedlings. No need to register. Kids can also make pine cone bird feeders.

The Repair Café will be back as will the book swap (bring one, take one). You will have a chance to learn about rain barrels, raised herb garden beds and what the Friends of the Rouge Watershed is up to these days.

NEW this year, we are proud to present a FREE special screening of local film director Jamie Fleck’s documentary movie In My Backyard. This beautiful film explores Jamie’s personal journey into backyard vegetable gardening. She will be there to answer your questions about managing a backyard kitchen! In My Backyard tells stories of individuals who  are changing their communities through local food production. The film will screen in the library’s multi-purpose room starting at 1 p.m. Please join us for this inspiring and educational presentation.

Head on over to West Rouge CC (270 Rouge Hills Dr.) where the 2nd Highland Creek Scouts will be running their giant drive-through recycling program.

I’d like to thank volunteers from the Earth Day committee, West Rouge Sports and Recreation, CCRA, West Rouge Community Association, the Rouge Buttterflyway, Iron Mountain, the West Hill Lions Club, Port Union Seniors, Sue Anfang Real Estate, Jamie Fleck, and the City of Toronto for making this event possible.
