This holiday season, support Mowat’s Christmas Cheer, an annual two-week campaign for charity organized by the Mowat Prefects. From December 11-22, take part in an event each day to make a difference in the community while getting into the holiday spirit. This year’s proceeds will go towards Covenant House Toronto, the country’s largest agency for homeless youth.

Funds raised from event admissions and donations will help combat youth homelessness and trafficking. Covenant House creates short- and long-term solutions for the 7,000 youth without a home on any given night, by providing education, transitional housing, counselling, health care, employment assistance, job training and aftercare.

Prefect co-captains Haleigh Running, Brittany Imasuen, and Katie Maunder urge students and community members alike to show that they care in the two weeks leading up to the holidays.

“I want people to show up to the events and enjoy themselves, but to always keep in mind why we take part in this fundraising effort,” says Brittany. “I want them to remember that not every child starts out in life with equal opportunity, and it is our responsibility as people to care for those who are less fortunate.”

There is plenty to enjoy in those two weeks, including a student auction, Mowat Idol, and a pancake breakfast. Those nostalgic for Christmas Cheers of years past will find the excitement they are looking for this year with the return of Teacher X, a staff talent show that has been the highlight of previous campaigns.

The closing assembly on Dec. 22 also promises to be a hit. Mowat’s own Mr. Madill will be producing the closing assembly this year, in the interest of restoring it to the community-wide event it was years ago. Proof of Mr. Madill’s hilarious past productions can be found on YouTube.

Haleigh has a message for the community: “Christmas Cheer is made possible due to community and student participation. In order to make Christmas Cheer as successful as possible, we need support! Help us spread the holiday spirit and fundraise for a great charity by participating! Donating, attendance, active involvement – all is needed!”

The Mowat Prefects encourage the Mowat student body and the entire community to come out and support the Youth Covenant House by doing everything they can to donate, raise awareness and be kind to one another during this holiday season.
