Join us for Harvest Fest on September 28!

It was great seeing so many of you at our community events this summer. Thank you to everyone who joined us at our Winter in July-themed Movie in the Park – your attendance and participation are what make these events so special. I am also grateful to the City of Toronto’s Transportation Services for bringing the snow equipment and CUPE 416 for hosting the movie with us.

On Saturday, September 28, I will be hosting my second annual Harvest Fest at the Port Union Community Centre. This exciting community event will once again bring together local farmers, vendors and community members to celebrate the fall season in Scarborough. We will be hosting a community market that will spotlight local vendors, farmers and creators, and we will also host family-friendly activities, performances by local artists, a community barbecue, and more. Admission is free. I hope to see you there.

You can find more information about the event on our website: jennifermckelvie.ca/events/harvest-fest.

Port Union Road Construction

The Port Union Road Improvements Project will enhance travel and road safety along Port Union Road for all road users. It will widen the road to provide two traffic lanes in each direction, add raised cycle tracks and include sidewalks on both sides.

To date, the project has:

  • Completed the retaining wall construction on the west side of Port Union Road, north and south of Rozell Rd., and at Adam’s Creek.
  • Installed catch basins and connected them to existing storm pipes between Lawson Rd. and Lawrence Ave.
  • Relocated and installed new hydro poles for upgraded electrical infrastructure
  • Laid underground conduits for new streetlights on the east side.

Construction into December will focus on the west side of Port Union Rd. from Island Rd. to Lawrence. To accelerate the construction schedule, pending weather conditions through winter, the contractor is planning to carry out work on retaining walls on the east side as well as underground electrical work. Road work will begin on the east side in early spring 2025.

You can find out more information and register to receive updates on the project at toronto.ca/portunionroad.

Reopening the Waterfront Trail

Torontonians can once again enjoy the Waterfront Trail with the portion of the trail west of Highland Creek now open. You may recall the trail in this area was washed out and dangerous for users.

The trail was closed while construction was undertaken by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) to protect it against erosion. The trail has been elevated, a beach curb has been added, and stairs are now installed to improve beach access.

Thank you to the TRCA for their hard work on restoring and protecting our beautiful natural landmarks.
