New dental care plan for uninsured Canadians
Happy New Year, Centennial! I hope each of you had the chance to spend time with family and loved ones as we counted down the New Year and enjoyed the festive holiday season. As we step into 2024, I want to wish all of you a joyful, healthy and prosperous New Year!
Canada Dental Care Plan
Dental care is critical to our overall health and well-being, with regular visits to a dentist proven to reduce the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and severe health problems like cardiovascular disease and stroke. That is why our new Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) will provide quality oral health coverage for up to 9 million uninsured Canadians with an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000.
To meet the expected demand surge and ensure smooth onboarding, the CDCP will be introduced in phases over the next few months. This will begin with seniors, who tend to rely on fixed incomes and have higher health costs – kindly refer to the graphic for rollout dates.
Here are the key guidelines to the CDCP. I encourage you to visit Canada.ca/Dental for more information.
- Eligible persons must have filed a tax return in the previous year, have no dental insurance, and have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000.
- No co-payments for those below $70,000
40% co-payment for those between $70,000 – $79,999
60% co-payment for those between $80,000 – $89,999
- Coverage for various oral health-care services, which can include: cleaning, polishing, sealants, fluoride, examinations, x-rays, fillings, root canal treatments, complete or partial dentures, deep scaling, and extractions.
- Limit out-of-pocket expenses by requiring registered dental providers to submit claims directly to Sun Life for payment.
Potentially eligible seniors will be receiving letters with a personalized application code for the CDCP and instructions on applying over the phone with Service Canada. Enrolled participants will then receive a member ID card and coverage start date from Sun Life.
As we work to lower costs for all Canadians, the new Canadian Dental Care Plan will make a real difference in the lives of 9 million Canadians. I look forward to seeing the CDCP serve families and dental practices in Scarborough–Rouge Park, where it will improve affordability, enhance health outcomes, and reduce the strain on our health care system.
Preparing for Budget 2024
From building transit in Scarborough to constructing affordable homes, the investments in each federal budget are felt in communities and households across Canada. With inflation continuing to fall, Budget 2024 must strike a balance between fiscal prudence and equally important investments in housing, good-paying jobs, and climate change.
From now until February 9, I invite you to share your ideas and priorities at LetsTalkBudget24.ca
2023 Toy Drive: Thank You!
Every year, the holidays in Scarborough–Rouge Park are made brighter by the kindness and generosity of its residents. I want to sincerely thank everyone who supported our annual toy drive for children with sickle cell anemia at the Scarborough Health Network.
In collaboration with the Dotty Nicholas Sickle Cell Scholarship Fund Association, we provided gifts to 52 children so they, too, could celebrate a very memorable Christmas!
