Putting more money back in your pockets
I hope you and your families are keeping well! There is no doubt that many people are struggling right now, but I want to reassure you that we are the only government that is currently focused on providing relief to the hard-working people of this province.
Whether it’s cutting the gas tax, eliminating license plate sticker renewal fees, or implementing programs like One Fare, our government is putting more money back in your pockets.
Ontario’s One Fare Program
I was proud to introduce Ontario’s One Fare Program that allows riders to pay only once as they transfer for free between the TTC, GO Transit and participating transit agencies in the GTA, including:
● Durham Region Transit
● Brampton Transit
● MiWay in Mississauga
● York Region Transit
● Barrie Transit
● Burlington Transit
● Bradford West Gwillimbury Transit
● Grand River Transit
● Guelph Transit
● Hamilton Street Railway
● Milton Transit
● Oakville Transit
Whether you’re commuting to work or school, or visiting friends and family, we are making transferring from one transit system to another simpler, more convenient and more affordable. For an adult who commutes five days a week, this could save you an average of $1,600 a year.
Fighting the Carbon Tax
Our government has been clear from the beginning that we believe imposing a painful carbon tax on our communities is unfair during this time of high inflation and economic uncertainty. We continue to push the federal government to give our residents a break by eliminating the carbon tax that has only contributed to a higher cost of living.
At the same time, we are proposing measures that will ensure no future provincial government imposes a carbon tax on your dime without your consent through a referendum. We will always fight to keep costs down!
Preparing for Ontario’s 2024 Budget
I was delighted to join my Scarborough colleagues and PA Rick Byers from the Ministry of Finance to hear from community organizations and businesses in Scarborough about our local priorities as we prepare for Ontario’s 2024 budget.
I want to thank our amazing partners who joined us and gave us their thoughts about our next steps in building Scarborough for the future.
Refurbishing Pickering Nuclear Generating Station
I am pleased to announce that our government is supporting Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) plan to refurbish the Pickering Nuclear Generating System, which provides reliable, affordable and clean energy for our community here in Scarborough.
It is important to note that this plan will require approval from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission following a rigorous and transparent process. However, it is worth noting that this site has never been stronger in terms of both safety and performance.
We have always been a steadfast supporter of nuclear energy through our plan to meet Ontario’s electricity needs as this announcement will help produce more than 2,000MW of clean electricity to power our growing province. Furthermore, it will grow our economy and create more jobs for our community.
