Saying goodbye – and staying connected

By Kathy Rowe

Greetings Centennial!  What a warm summer that was.  I don’t think I have ever seen so many brown lawns and park spaces in the community. I hope you were able to stay cool and enjoy you time in the sunshine.

The summer was filled with fun outdoor events which CCRA happily sponsored. The Highland Creek Heritage Day Festival and Waterfront Festival were held in June. Both were successful well attended and rain-free events. The July summer concerts were all held outdoors this year and the bands were well received. Many thanks to all of the volunteers who worked hard planning and executing these events for residents to enjoy.

Fond Farewells From CCRA

Summer brought two significant changes to the CCRA and to Centennial.  Julie Kish, our communications director and book review writer extraordinaire has moved to Niagara-on-the- Lake. We will miss Julie very much as she was a big part of our editorial team and an excellent writer. For the past 2 years, Julie volunteered on the Winterfest planning committee as both treasurer and vendor coordinator.  We wish Julie all the best in her new community. Niagara-on- the-Lake is fortunate to have her!

Community Recreation Programmer Rob McMulkin has left the Port Union Community Centre after ten years of dedicated service.  Rob was always a huge supporter of the many community events that take place at the Port Union C.C. and he will be missed by many. At the final July concert, the area community associations showed their appreciation for Rob with gifts and a goodbye cake. There were speeches and hugs and enough cake to share with all of the concert goers that evening. Rob is now working at the new Rouge Valley Community Recreation and Child Care Centre on Sheppard Avenue near Conlins Rd. We want to wish Rob all the best at his new workplace.

September Ward 25 By-Election

I have written a brief article about the upcoming By-Election and the two all candidate forums that will be held this month for the residents of Ward 25. I hope you will take advantage of these opportunities so that you can make an informed decision on September 29th.

About the CCRA

The CCRA board members meet monthly. Meetings are held at the Port Union Community Centre at 7:15 pm on the first Tuesday of every month. We meet from September through June with the exception of December. All residents are welcome to attend our board meetings to listen to our reports and learn more about the CCRA.

We encourage residents to follow us on social media  (Facebook/Instagram @ccranews) and visit our website for in-depth information about this organization – ccranews.com  When visiting the website, make sure to subscribe for our monthly email. Just scroll to the bottom of the webpage to subscribe. The email will provide you with community news in between newspaper publications.  Please support the CCRA by purchasing a membership online. Just click on the “member signup” at the top of the home page and follow the steps. A membership only costs $15 per household per year.
