With no end to the snow mountains outside our doors, students may opt to relax indoors with their family and friends this March Break, rather than brave the cold. My friends and I came to a similar decision recently as we crafted together under one roof, sheltered from the flurries. Crafting with loved ones isn’t only an excellent way to bring out our creativity, but also to catch up with those who mean the most to us. So, here are two crafts for artists of all ages to enjoy during March Break!

Vision Board Bingo Cards

This craft is courtesy of Centennial community member Mehvish, who gives us a twist on classic vision boards. As Mehvish attests, a vision board bingo card allows us to reflect on our ambitions, while keeping track of our progress: “Once finished, put the bingo card someplace you’ll see it regularly, so you have that constant reminder of what you’re working towards, and the fun you can have along the way to achieving it!” When asked about tips for creating a bingo card that is personal and meaningful, Mehvish advises, “Use a mix of mediums … for the maximum amount of fun and aesthetic.”

What You Will Need:

  • Cardstock
  • Markers/crayons/pens/pencils

Optional Materials:

  • Paint/paintbrushes
  • Glitter/stickers/stencils
  • Images
  • Ruler
  • Glue
  • Scissors

Steps:

  1. Take time to consider your hopes for this year.
  2. Draw a grid on the cardstock, with the number of boxes corresponding to your number of goals.
  3. Write each of your aspirations in a box and decorate to your heart’s content!

Clay Fridge Magnets

This creation comes from fellow crafter, Madeeha, who brought up the idea to adorn our fridges with adorable clay cakes, doughnuts, and more. While you can sculpt many creations in addition to baked goods, these clay magnets are heated in the oven, so parental supervision is required for younger artists.

What You Will Need:

  • Polymer modeling clay
  • Mini magnets
  • Hot glue gun
  • Oven-safe glass or metal baking sheet
  • Parchment paper

Optional Materials:

  • Clay sculpting tools
  • Clay gloss
  • Paintbrush

Steps:

  1. Preheat the oven.
  2. Roll out the clay and sculpt it into any creations you wish!
  3. Once all your pieces are ready to be heated, place them side by side on the parchment-lined baking sheet. Ensure there is ample space between them. Bake for about 15 minutes at 130 to 140℃.
  4. Remove from the oven and wait 5 to 10 minutes to cool. If the clay feels solid, they’re ready for the next steps.
  5. If you want, brush each piece with gloss and let them air dry.
  6. After the clay has cooled, glue one or more magnets onto the back of each creation and display them!
