Port Union Construction and Community Environment Day

Thank you to all the volunteers who came out to show their love for Mother Earth at community cleanups across Rouge Park last month.

We’re hosting our Community Environment Day on May 26 from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Rouge Hill GO North Parking Lot (6251 Lawrence Ave. E). You can drop off electronic and household hazardous waste, donate items for reuse, and pick up free bagged compost.

Just one of the many waste reduction programs and initiatives supporting the City’s Long-Term Waste Management Strategy, Community Environment Days bring the community together for a greener Toronto.

Every year, the City of Toronto manages close to 900,000 tonnes of waste. Last year, community events diverted over 80,000 kilograms of electronics, 300,000 kilograms of household hazardous waste, and 65,000 kilograms of reusable household goods from landfills. To find the full list of what you can and cannot bring, visit toronto.ca/community-environment-days.

Port Union Construction Update

Construction work is now underway on Port Union Road, beginning from Lawson Road to Lawrence Ave. East and later, north of Lawson Road.

During construction, Port Union Road will be reduced to one lane both ways and pedestrian access will be maintained. TTC bus routes will continue to operate, though bus stops may be temporarily relocated if required. Work will take place from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. and the City will make efforts to reduce the impacts of dust, noise and other inconveniences.

The Port Union Road Improvements project will improve road safety and will include a new northbound lane, centre-turn lanes, and raised bike tracks and new sidewalks on both sides of the street. You can read about the project online at toronto.ca/portunionroad.

“Slow Down!” Signs Now Available

Reducing traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries on Toronto’s streets is one of my top priorities. Since the start of the Vision Zero Road Safety Plan in 2017, initiatives including safety zones have led to an overall 15 percent reduction in fatalities and serious injuries between 2018-2022 compared to the previous five-year average.

Community Safety Zones allow for the doubling of fines associated with speeding and the use of an automated speed enforcement system. School Safety Zones feature a variety of measures including improved pavement markings, flashing beacons, and more.

Since 2017, 25 Community Safety Zones and 18 School Safety Zones have been installed throughout Scarborough-Rouge Park. In the Centennial community, school safety zones will be installed this year at Centennial Road Junior Public School and St. Brendan Catholic Elementary School.

As the City undertakes extensive, proactive initiatives under our Vision Zero Road Safety Plan, you can help by displaying a “Please Slow Down” lawn sign to remind drivers to slow down in your neighbourhood from now until November 30.

Residents of Scarborough-Rouge Park can request a “slow down” sign by emailing our office at councillor_mckelvie@toronto.ca.
