Shopping in Scarborough offers a diverse and vibrant experience, however, with recent thefts in neighbouring areas raising concerns, it’s crucial for Centennial community residents to prioritize safety during shopping trips. Whether you’re in a parking lot or on the streets, here are key tips to protect yourself from potential threats.

Preventing Theft

Travel Light: Carry only what you need, such as small amounts of cash and necessary credit cards. Avoid carrying valuables or sentimental items, but if you must, keep them secure in inner pockets or pouches.

Baggage Awareness: Keep purses and bags securely closed and carried in front of your body, with an arm loosely across them. Consider travelling without a bag if it’s unnecessary.

Backpack Security: Ensure all pockets are zipped and secure, especially in crowded areas. When in public spaces, bring your backpack to the front and loosely hold onto it.

Essentials Separation: Spread small essentials like keys, ID and phone across different pockets to minimize loss in case of theft.

Route Planning and Awareness

Plan Ahead: Consider your route, time of day, and potential trouble spots before leaving. Be prepared to change course if needed and inform someone of your plans.

Stay Alert: Avoid distractions and remain vigilant in crowded areas where thefts can go unnoticed. Familiarize yourself with common thief tactics to better protect yourself.

Safety on the Street

Confident Strides: Walk with purpose and confidence, sticking to well-lit, high-traffic areas and avoiding isolated spots like parking lots and alleyways.

Maintain Distance: Keep a safe distance from strangers, even if approached with seemingly innocent intentions.

Mobile Dressing: Wear clothing and shoes that allow for quick and comfortable movement.

Action if Followed: Change directions, head towards populated areas, and seek help if someone appears to be following you. Avoid approaching cars if signaled and remain alert when talking on the phone.

Transportation Safety

Car Preparation: Have your keys ready as you leave the building and remain alert when approaching your car. If someone is loitering near your car, avoid approaching and seek assistance.

Quick Entry: Enter your car quickly and lock the door immediately. Drive to a public place and honk for attention if followed.

Public Transportation: Have your fare ready and easily accessible. Avoid opening and rummaging through your purse or wallet at the bus stop.

Seat Selection: Sit near the front of the bus, especially late at night, and keep your possessions on your lap. Remain alert and notify the driver if someone is bothering you.

Proactive Measures

Tracking Devices: Personal tracking devices for wallets and purses can provide an extra layer of security. These small devices can be placed inside wallets or attached to keychains, allowing users to track their belongings in real-time through smartphone apps.

Cell Phone Security: Ensuring strong cell phone security is paramount in safeguarding personal information and access to essential services, especially considering how people rely heavily on their cellphones for storing valuable information. It’s crucial to implement measures such as passcodes, biometric authentication, and encryption to prevent unauthorized access in the event of theft.

By integrating these technologies into their daily routines, residents can enhance their ability to recover lost or stolen items and protect themselves against potential identity theft or financial fraud. Stay vigilant, stay safe, and always prioritize personal safety above all else.
