On Saturday, April 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., residents will have plenty of opportunities to participate in our community Earth Day at the Port Union and West Rouge community centres.

The community area clean-up will take place between 9:30 a.m. and noon. Volunteers are encouraged to pick up litter using provided garbage bags and gloves. Volunteer hours will be given to students and a free lunch will be provided to all volunteers at noon.

Members of the Rouge Butterflyway will be there to educate garden lovers about native plants. You’ll be able to pre-order plants for your gardens for late spring delivery.

There will be a free drop-in building workshop for children between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Kids will create small wooden planters for their potted seedlings. No need to register! Just show up. Parents, bring a hammer if you have one.

There will be potted seedling giveaways and kids can make a pinecone bird feeder. The Repair Café will be back! Bring your small appliances, clothing that needs mending, jewellery, clocks and more. We’ll also have raised herb gardens and the Lions Club will be there selling rain barrels.

New this year will be a bring-one, take-one book swap as well as on-site paper shredding. An Iron Mountain shredding truck will be there to shred your sensitive papers. No need to remove paper clips or staples. Drive through the lot, unload your papers and hop back into your car while Iron Mountain does the deed!

Over at the West Rouge Community Centre (270 Rouge Hills Dr.) the Second Highland Creek Scouts will be running a giant drive-through recycling program for residents. See full list below.

Finally, please bring your shovels and pails to the West Rouge C.C. to collect free compost provided by the city.

I’d like to thank volunteers from West Rouge Sports and Recreation Association, CCRA, West Rouge Community Association, the Rouge Butterflyway, the West Hill Lions Club, Sue Anfang Real Estate and the City of Toronto for making this event possible.

After a three-year hiatus, 2nd Highland Creek Scouting group is going to be running our community recycling event at our NEW LOCATION at the West Rouge Community Centre, 270 Rouge Hills Drive. We have outgrown the Port Union Community Centre. This is the fourth year for our event and we expect it to be even bigger than the last one.

Over the first three years, we cleaned up 78.3 tons of material from our community.  This has funded our programs and allowed for amazing adventures for all ages of our scouting programs. We will be running this year’s event on April 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

We will be accepting e-waste, scrap metal, all batteries (including car and disposable batteries), clean used clothing, and returnable bottles and cans (for beer or alcohol).

We’ll take broken or unwanted electronics, which include all TVs, VCRs, computers, monitors, printers, faxes and stereos.

Other items you can give us: wire, Christmas lights, appliances, ties, luggage, shoes, fabric, yarn, bedding, blankets, linens, draperies, belts and purses.

As you can see from this exhaustive list, we have partnered up with multiple organizations to be able to accept your donations at our event. All donations are kept in the country and not shipped or processed overseas. All data is taken care of on all devices.

Please plan on coming out that day rain or shine and we will be happy to unload your donations from your car. These donations will enable your local scouting group to provide a fully enriched scouting experience for all.
