Join us at our Black History Month Celebration

I would like to begin by thanking the members of the Centennial Community and Recreation Association for hosting another successful Port Union Winterfest celebration on Saturday, January 25. My team and I always look forward to celebrating Winterfest with the residents of our community, and are eagerly awaiting the 25th Anniversary of Winterfest in 2021!

New Year’s Levee

On Sunday, January 26, my team and I hosted our 5th Annual New Year’s Levee at our constituency office. I would like to thank everyone from the Centennial community who joined us and shared their vision for Scarborough–Rouge Park in the weeks, months and years ahead.

Residents in our community continue to be most interested in our government’s climate action plan, future infrastructure projects and the steps we are taking to continue growing Canada’s economy. What impressed me most was the number of poignant questions my staff and I received from the youth in our community.

Black History Month

As we mark the halfway point of the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent, I would like to invite you and your family to join us for our 5th Annual Black History Month Celebration – Looking Back to Move Forward at St. Mother Teresa Catholic Academy on Saturday, February 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m..

Our guest speakers for the event are Ruth Goba, Executive Director of Black Legal Action Centre, and Agapi Gessesse, Executive Director of CEE Centre for Young Black Professionals.

A special keynote address will be delivered by Professor Wisdom Tettey, vice-president of the University of Toronto and Principal of the University of Toronto Scarborough.

While we continue to acknowledge February as a celebration of the contributions and accomplishments of the Black community to Canada, we also recognize that the declaration is a call for action with the premise that “people of African descent represent a distinct group whose human rights must be promoted and protected” (un.org/en/events/africandescentdecade/).

All are welcome to attend.
