Thanks for joining us at our Black History Month event
I would like to begin by thanking the members of the
Centennial community who joined us for our 5th annual Black History
Month celebration at St. Mother Teresa Catholic Academy on Saturday, February
8.
Our celebration focused on marking the halfway
point of the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent.
Together, we reflected on the successes and some of the shortcomings of the
previous five years, and envisioned the actions required to make the next five
years more equitable, progressive and successful for our community, our country
and our world.
This year, we were thrilled to have a number of influential members of the Black Canadian community join us for our celebration, including Keynote Speaker Professor Wisdom Tettey, Vice-President of the University of Toronto and Principal of University of Toronto, Scarborough.
Flag Day
On Saturday, February 15, Canadians across the country celebrated the 55th anniversary of our beloved Canadian flag. Many residents from our community remember fondly where they were on February 15, 1965, the day our iconic flag with its red and white stripes and maple leaf, was raised for the first time.
For 55 years, the Canadian flag has been recognized the world over for the beautiful, tolerant and diverse country it represents. It highlights the fact that the common values that unite us – openness, generosity, peace and freedom – are stronger than our differences.
I was honoured to represent the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship in Scarborough for a special Flag Day citizenship ceremony as we welcomed 98 new citizens to Canada – all of whom share a deep appreciation and respect for our national flag.
