In November, an incredible 91,000 jobs were created

Happy New Year, Centennial! I would like to begin by thanking the members of our community who took it upon themselves to make the holiday season in Scarborough–Rouge Park extra special! From our public health-care and emergency services workers who dutifully gave up their Christmas morning and New Year’s Eve to ensure the safety of our community to our local leaders who organized holiday craft and bake sales to help spread some holiday cheer, your efforts are truly appreciated by all.

Community Pancake Breakfast and Toy Drive

In December, Team Gary hosted our first-ever Community Pancake Breakfast and Toy Drive at St. Mother Teresa Catholic Academy. I am pleased to announce that the event was a tremendous success! Thanks to the generosity of local community members, Team Gary was able to donate a number of children’s Christmas toys to the Scarborough Health Network as well as to our local women’s shelter.

Job Growth and the Canadian Economy

In November, an incredible 94,100 jobs were added to Canadian economy – 89,900 of which are full-time positions! This record-setting boost to our economy has reduced national unemployment to 5.6 percent, the lowest it has been since Statistics Canada began tracking data 40 years ago.

Earlier this month, I attended the grand opening of Sakara Wood Inc., a brand new manufacturing facility here in Scarborough–Rouge Park. The owner, Mr. Baskaran,  cited the strength of the Canadian economy as one of the reasons he decided to open his new facility.

I am proud to work with a government that continues to create policy designed to drive economic growth and help businesses like Sakara Wood Inc. succeed.

Closure of Centre Block

On December 9, as Members of Parliament rose from their seats in the House of Commons, things felt understandably different. Starting in January, Centre Block, home to both the House of Commons and the Senate of Canada, will undergo a 10-year renovation and modernization. Since opening on July 1, 1927, Centre Block has been the home of countless historic debates and significant national decisions, many of which have forever shaped the landscape of our country. From famous speeches by Winston Churchill and Malala Yousafzai to the drafting and implementation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the history that has unfolded within Centre Block is undeniable. Closing the doors of Centre Block for 10 years will seem like a lifetime, but I look forward to the day our national treasure is reopened and the history of our country continues to once again be written within its walls.
