Updates on summer jobs, dental care, and auto theft
Creating Summer Job Opportunities: Summer jobs provide youth with valuable skills, experience, and confidence that extend well beyond the warmer months. I’m pleased to share that this year’s Canada Summer Jobs program created more than 70,000 summer jobs, including 254 positions in Scarborough—Rouge Park. Applying youth will find fulfilling work experiences across a variety of fields, such as conservation, hospitality, sports, and research.
The hiring period for Canada Summer Jobs is now underway and will run until July 22. I encourage young Canadians aged 15 to 30 to secure an amazing summer job by visiting jobbank.gc.ca/youth.
Delivering On Dental Care: We are delivering on our promise to help more Canadians access dental care and make life more affordable. On May 1, seniors enrolled in the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) began visiting dental practices across the country. In less than three weeks, over 90,000 seniors received much-needed dental services, and more than 9,500 out of 30,500 oral health providers have joined the CDCP, with more registering every day.
Find a Participating Dental Practice Near You: Most patients want to continue going to their family dentist or a dentist near their home. That is why we are working hard with oral health professionals to make the CDCP easier to join so more dental practices and patients can benefit.
Please visit sunlife.ca/sl/cdcp/en/member/provider-search to easily find participating dental practices in our community. Starting July 8, CDCP patients can see any oral health provider as long as they agree to bill Sun Life directly for services.

Tackling Auto Theft: Auto theft is a complex problem that requires action from governments, manufacturers, insurance companies, shippers, and law enforcement. Each partner has a role to play, and we are taking immediate action at the federal level:
· $121 million to Ontario police services to help them disrupt, dismantle, and prosecute the organized crime groups involved in auto theft.
· Adding tougher penalties for auto theft offences and cracking down on the sale, possession, distribution, and import of devices commonly used to steal cars.
· $28 million to the Canada Border Services Agency to ensure they can scan outbound rail and shipping containers for stolen cars. As of May 20, the CBSA has intercepted 1,205 stolen vehicles in railyards and ports in 2024.
· New scanning tools and improvements to bolster the CBSA’s anti-smuggling efforts at hotspots like the Port of Montreal.
· Enhancing Intelligence sharing between municipal, provincial, federal and international police, and customs officials to support criminal investigations and prosecutions.
The Government of Canada will continue to work with its partners to make it harder to steal cars, make it harder to move stolen cars to a port, target and prosecute the criminals stealing cars, and recover stolen vehicles in ports and rail yards.
