Ponche de crème is very much a strong tradition among the Trinidadian community. “People love having a glass of this delicious drink with a piece of black cake when visiting friends,” said Sharon. She mentioned that for the children there is homemade ginger beer or sorrel, another traditional holiday drink.
Recipe
- Beat a dozen eggs along with wide strips of lemon peel until the eggs are frothy (remove the peel after beating).
- Add to the beaten eggs: 1 tin of sweetened condensed milk, ½ tin of evaporated milk (or to taste to adjust viscosity), ¾ bottle of your favourite rum (approximately 20 ounces), and 2 or 3 dashes of angostura bitters.
- Chill and serve in a pretty glass with a sprinkling of grated nutmeg.
“Cheers and Happy Holidays!”
