Start date: July 10, 2023 End date: December 2024. More information at: toronto.ca/portunionroad

This summer, the City of Toronto will begin road reconstruction and watermain replacement on Port Union Road from Island Road to Lawrence Avenue East. Improvements that will be made as part of this work include widening Port Union Road to create a new northbound vehicle lane, installation of raised cycle tracks and continuous sidewalks on both sides of the street.

To improve road safety, new centre-lanes will be placed at select locations, and curb extensions with raised pedestrian crossings will be added at side streets.

Once complete, these changes will improve conditions for people walking, cycling and driving, and will help to better manage traffic flow.

Port Union Road Update September 2023

By Amaan Jabbar

The Port Union Road construction project is making significant progress. As of September 18, crews had accomplished 80% of the tree removals in the northwest section of Port Union Road. This step is crucial in preparing the area for further construction.

A noteworthy development is the completion of the temporary signal installation at Lawson Road, a key intersection. This installation is a step towards managing traffic effectively during construction.

In mid-September, the crews were in the process of excavating to confirm utilities on site, paving the way for the construction of sidewalks and retaining walls. This critical phase sets the foundation for a safer and more accessible road.

For the last two weeks of September, efforts were focused on removing the island at Lawson Road. Additionally, crews were starting sidewalk installation, giving a clearer estimation of the project’s timeline.

The construction of a retaining wall at Rozell Road was also expected to begin last month, enhancing the road’s stability and durability. Tree pruning and removal operations took place throughout September, ensuring a smooth and safe construction process.

The community’s patience and cooperation is appreciated by the city during this project.

Port Union Road Update November 2023

From the beginning to the middle of October, crews successfully finished excavating for the retaining wall near the Rozell Drive intersection.

Furthermore, measures to protect trees were successfully implemented on the west side of Port Union Road, spanning from Island Road to Lawson Road.
For the last two weeks of October, the team started the sidewalk installations and will be progressing with this work over the next few weeks.

Toronto Hydro also has proceeded to complete hydro-related work and this is anticipated to take a few weeks to complete. Upon completion of the hydro work, crews will be able to proceed with the installation of the retaining wall at Rozell Road.

At the end of October and early in November, crews drilled the holes for the structural steel to support the retaining wall on Rozell Road. This work involved pouring concrete for the base of the wall to support the steel. They also formed the shape of the wall out of plywood and then tied in rebar between the structural steel, followed by pouring concrete. Once the concrete had cured, crews continued to strip the form and backfilled around the wall for support.

Port Union Road update January 2024

From mid-December 2023, the city’s contractor will be pausing all road reconstruction activities to align with the winter conditions. However, this does not mean a halt in progress. The contractor will shift their focus towards relocating hydro poles on the west side of Port Union Road, specifically between Island Road and Lawrence Avenue East.

Here’s what you can expect during this period:

  1. Roads and Sidewalks: Temporary restoration will be carried out on the roads and sidewalks to ensure safe passage for all residents.
  2. Travel Lane Update: An additional southbound lane has been opened Port Union Road enhancing traffic flow.
  3. Temporary Lane Closures: Please note that to facilitate the pole relocation work, temporary lane closures may be necessary at times.

Port Union Road update February 2024

The contractor has completed the installation of all hydro poles between Island Road and Lawson Road.

Upcoming Work:

On the week of January 22, the focus shifted southward where crews will be completing the pole relocation on the west side from Lawson Road to Lawrence Avenue East. During this phase of work there will be small rolling closures within the designated work zone. Rolling closures will be reinstated by the end of each day.

Adam’s Creek Excavation:

In preparation for the retaining wall installation, excavation work at Adam’s Creek was scheduled to start the week of January 22 (weather permitting).

During this phase of work crews may require a partial lane closure at the location of Adam’s Creek.

Traffic and pedestrian access will be maintained to minimize inconvenience to residents and businesses in the vicinity. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times within the construction zone. TTC bus routes will continue to operate during construction. Travel impacts during the winter months include one lane northbound and an additional southbound lane from Island Road to Lawson Road.
