Thanks to all who contributed to success of Earth Day event!

By Kathy Rowe

Thanks to Mother Nature, the rain held off on April 23 and Earth Day 2022 was a grand success. Thank you to the City of Toronto, Parks Forestry and Recreation division for partnering and hosting. As usual, Rob McMulkin, Community Recreation Programmer at the Port Union Community Centre, helped the event run smoothly. Many thanks to volunteer Bob Lalonde who created 60 bee pollinator nest kits and facilitated the fun workshops for the families.

What made Earth Day so special this year was the variety of displays that helped to educate those who came. Everything from native gardening to wastewater management was addressed at our event. The Repair Café volunteers were able to give longevity to textiles and small appliances. Thank you to all those who manned these excellent displays.

Our area clean-up went very well and I want to thank the many volunteers who participated in collecting garbage from around the neighbourhood. The turnout this year was unmatched!

This event couldn’t have happened without the financial and volunteer support from the CCRA, WRSR and WRCA. Congratulations to everyone on a very successful Earth Day!

Candidates Meeting

A provincial election is coming our way. June 2 is voting day and to help residents make their voting decision there will be an in-person all-candidates meeting held within the first two weeks of May. It will be held at the Legion on Lawson Road. We hope that candidates from all parties will be able to speak at this event. Please keep an eye out for our CCRA E-blast and our social media platforms for the date and time. Thanks in advance to volunteers from our area associations for organizing this important event.

Community June Festivals Are Back!

The Highland Creek Heritage Day festival will be held on Saturday, June 18at Highland Creek Park, which is located at 3500 Ellesmere Rd. There will be children’s rides, food trucks, vendors and more.

The Port Union Waterfront Festival will be held the following weekend on Saturday, June 25 at the Village Commons. There will be lots of attractions such as rides, good food and live music. Both festivals will surely bring on the long-awaited community celebration of summer. Come by and say hello.

The CCRA will be at both festivals to take your annual memberships and talk to you about all that the CCRA does throughout the year.

July Summer Concert Series

On the heels of the June festivals, we will be helping to organize three free live outdoor concerts behind the Port Union Community Centre in July. These concerts will take place on three consecutive Sundays: July 10,17 and 24.  Planning will begin this month and there will be more details in the coming weeks.  We hope to see you in July!
