Scout group’s recycling fundraiser a huge success

By Tracy Forsyth

The 2nd Highland Creek Scout group would like to thank our community for its overwhelming support  for our first-ever Scouts recycling fundraising event. We would  like to thank our sponsor CCRA, as well as  Ontario Electronic Stewardship , K and K Recycling, Kidney Clothes, the Port Union Community Centre,  Terry Fielder, and Rob McMulkin for supporting us.

We reused or recycled 18,050 lbs  of e-waste, 4,554 lbs of  clothing,  somewhere between 3,000-4,000  lbs of  scrap metal, 5,477 empties, 1,035 lbs of wire and 369 lbs of Christmas light wire.

We were amazed at the generous support we received. We plan on making this a yearly community event on Earth Day. We had 65 volunteers turn out to help with a whopping 390 volunteer hours on the day of the event. We had every Scout section out helping for the day: Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Ventures, Rovers, Scouters and parents. We also collected from more than 80 homes before the event happened.

This clearly is  a service our community needs and will support. We look forward to making it a bigger and better event for the community and Scouts next year.
