Day of Action for Missing and Murdered

Indigenous Women and Girls

We commemorated National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls on October 4. Each year on this date, the Native Women’s Association of Canada holds a Sisters in Spirit Vigil to honour them. The final report of the national Inquiry declared that “the violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQIA people is a ‘national tragedy of epic proportion’.”

Islamic Heritage Month

At the TDSB, we proudly recognized Islamic Heritage Month during October. This year’s theme was Sabr and Shukr in Muslim Communities. Several educational opportunities and activities were organized for all students to further learn about Islamic traditions and customs. To learn more, visit the Islamic Heritage Month webpage.

Also in October, we recognized Latin-America History Month. This year’s theme was Weaving Our Legacies: Returning to Our Collective Path | Enlazar Nuestres Legados: Volver a Nuestre Camino Colectivo. Activities were planned throughout the month for students, staff, and community members. To learn more, visit tdsb.on.ca and search for Latin American History Month.

TCDSB Trustee Garry Tanuan

It will be my privilege to lay a wreath at the Scarborough War Memorial Ceremony on November 11 at the Scarborough War Memorial for the annual City of Toronto Civic Remembrance Day Services.

Remembrance Day marks the signing of the armistice (peace agreement) between the Allies and Germany in Compiegne, France, in 1918. It took effect at eleven o’clock in the morning – the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.”

Virtue of the Month: Peace

Family Bowling Event Was a Big Hit

The Angel Foundation for Learning (AFL) in partnership with TCDSB Proudly Pinoy successfully held its first Family Bowling Event Fundraiser on October 19 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Markham Bowl.  The fundraiser supports a very worthy cause benefitting our TCDSB Students Nutrition Program & Pinoy Bursary Scholarship Award that awarded two graduating high school students $5,000 each for going into the Education sector (BA Ed or similar) in tertiary education.
