Construction on the west side of Port Union Road between Island Road and Lawrence Avenue East has been completed. Traffic has now shifted to the west side to allow winter work to begin on the east side of the street.

Winter Work on the East Side

The following work has been identified as the most suitable to carry out during the winter months to ensure steady progress on the project. However, all activities are weather-dependent and may need to pause during periods of extreme cold or heavy snowfall. Planned work includes:

  • Installation of catch basins, starting from Lawrence and moving north.
  • Installation of 29 streetlight poles and the required underground conduits.
  • Construction of the retaining walls at Blue Anchor Trail (near Dear Gate) and Lawson Road.

What to Expect

  • Minor grading and asphalt work to enable traffic lanes to shift to the west side of Port Union Road.
  • One lane of traffic in each direction with turning lanes added at key intersections.
  • The cycle track will remain closed until the completion of the project.
  • Activity may vary – you might not always see crews along the entire stretch of the project and many tasks are weather-dependent.
  • Snow clearing will be managed by both the contractor and the city’s winter operations team.
  • There will be a winter break from December 20 to January 5.

Closure of East-side Lanes

The east-side lanes must remain closed to ensure the safety of both workers and drivers. The closure:

  • Provides the space necessary for crews to work safely.
  • Enables effective snow-clearing in both the active traffic lanes and the construction zone.
  •  Mitigates safety risks due to uneven grades between finished and unfinished sections of the road.

Managing Congestion

Left-turn lanes will be added on Port Union Road at these cross-streets to keep traffic moving by preventing delays behind turning vehicles:

  • Rozell Road, for northbound traffic.
  • Lawson Road/Fanfare Ave., for northbound and southbound traffic.
  • Clappison Road for northbound traffic.
  • Lawrence Ave. E. for southbound traffic.
  • Additional travel lane between Blue Anchor Trail and Island Rd.

Please note that turning lanes and the additional travel lanes will be impacted when work occurs within close vicinity to these lanes. However, these impacts will be temporary and will reopen once the work is complete. The project remains on track for completion by the end of 2025.
